[dropcap style=”2″] H [/dropcap]aving a good reputation is vitally important to just about everyone. It is particularly important if your business depends on having such a reputation, or at the very least, NOT having a bad “rep”.  If you have ever had a negative post about you on the web, you know how un-nerving this can be personally, and the fiscal damage that it caused by negative reviews online is unfortunately immeasurable.

How will you know if your reputation and credibility is being tarnished? Fortunately there are a couple tools you can use to get notifications of ANY mention of you on the web, as long as they are picked up and indexed by Google. Chances of that are relatively good which means that if someone is engaging in defamation of your person, you are likely to know. Here is how you can practice some basic reputation management:

1. Sign up for Google Alerts.   It is a very simple process, as you can see by the following image.. it is a simple form you fill out,  once there is any mention of your specific query , you will be notified.  This can be very useful also to keep tabs on anything else you want to stay on top of.. use your imagination and you can find some very purposeful uses for it.

This is especially true when it comes to Search Engine Optimization. Sometimes, the information may have been valid in the past but is no longer valid and sometimes… it was never valid to begin with.

Here are ten SEO myths and their corresponding “truths” –

1.    It’s impossible to outrank a web page with a Google PageRank higher than your own.

While Google’s PageRank indicator may play a minor role in determining search engine placement, it’s not a critical factor.

If you conduct a few searches on Google you will find this to be true. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to find a page, with a lower Google PR, outranking a page with a higher one. Read more

Well have things not come along way from the early days of using the internet, back then there were companies offering their expensive services and we as new business users had no choice but to pay these over priced expert’s fees to learn how to market our business online. But today things are a lot different internet services companies have fallen into line because there are now an abundance of internet services companies available today which are both very effective and affordable. In fact you can now learn to market your own business online and it wont cost you as much as you think.

Of course that suited the very well paid experts out there, because when something is new and people don’t understand it, they are afraid that the computer in the corner of the office will suddenly cause a meltdown if you press the wrong button.

So what did they do? They called in some expert who charged a lot of money to set up even the simplest of internet marketing tools, such as e-mail.

Today things have changed for the better; you can open up your own e-mail account in minutes with the likes of Google, Yahoo, MSN and other providers.

Like email most other internet tools have become less complicated and easy to use and this is what has catapulted internet use to the heights of popularity which it enjoys today.

So you have spent a long time pondering about whether you will start marketing your business online and you have finally decided that you want to be a wealthy business person not a struggling business person so now you will embark on a journey that will result in massive personal wealth for you., and who can blame you..?

So let’s find out how we can do this, firstly get your mindset right, and don’t be skeptical when you read all that is great about the internet.

Those among us who do not believe that they can become incredibly wealthy by marketing online will themselves never be rich from online marketing. If you want to read about the multitude of internet millionaires where better to look then the internet itself.

So that done, now the next task is to establish what is the most cost effective way for you to begin, and there is an irony in that sentence, because whatever it costs you will become irrelevant when you reach the millionaire status, but being a business person you always have costs at the forefront of any new project.

From my experience a very well compiled online course fits the criteria here, and I will tell you why, you can work at your own pace, fast or slow which ever suits your style, you won’t be held back by slower students and you won’t be rushed by the class show off.

You can also decide which strategy within the course is most suited to your business. You can also use the material at no extra cost to train up other members of your team on marketing online. And again it is by far the cheapest method of learning online marketing.

choosing the correct course is of vital importance; The guy’s who put the course together should have a successful track record in the internet marketing industry.

A quick search on the internet will give you all the information you require to make that decision. So check out the authors and when you are satisfied that they can consistently show you in the course how to attract huge traffic to your website then I suggest you buy it and get to work! When you see the revenues pouring into your bank account you will know exactly what I am talking about.

In the era of electronic communication, need we pay the same level of attention to grammar and etiquette as we do in conventional communication mediums? Technology has revolutionized the method of information exchange. Emoticons were never of part of the traditional missive. In new media communication channels, button down CEOs, are firing off smilies, “lol”s, etc.. A 140 character tweet does not leave a whole lot of room for dotting all the “i”s and crossing all the “t”s of proper etiquette… ‘tis a strange new world we live in!!

Keep in mind:

In online communication there is near universal acceptance of slang. It is practically a necessity. Proven testing shows that a conversational style of writing, mistakes, slang and all, is a very effective way of communicating with your readers.

Having said that, we do need to be certain that our casual use of the language does not infect our off-line correspondence. Those same readers who forgive errors on line, will quickly discard your business proposal for the same mistake found in an advertisement or letter.

As always, remember that first impressions count for more than they should! Occasionally, even though it may be acceptable to use slang or shortcuts in your online communications, it may be wise to refrain from doing so.

Here is a funny story I read by a well known speaker, author and trainer, Stephen M. Canale:

An Amusing Story?

I still have the actual copy of a prospecting letter that I once sent, and also received! It was the typical “I have a buyer, who is looking for a home in your neighborhood” correspondence. I even offered to reduce my commission if anyone responded, and the customer subsequently purchased their home. I received one reply. Ozora McCarthy, (of 2880 Renfrew, Ann Arbor, Michigan) took the letter and wrote, in red pen, the following: “Stephen, Nice letter, nice stationary, nice offer on my home – but I would NEVER do business with a person who signs his name scribblescribblescribble”

You see, In an effort to be personal in my prospecting, I used to hand sign each and every letter I sent, even if that meant autographing hundreds of mailings! Well, by signature 143 or so, you can imagine that my autograph was not a work of beauty. Ozora hand wrote the above message on my letter itself, in rather poor script I might add, folded it in three, placed a .22 cent stamp on it (now you know how long I’ve kept this damn thing!) and mailed it back to me. The Lesson: Other than the obvious: Ozora McCarthey is a narrow-minded, mean-spirited, petty and insignificant excuse for a human being (just pulling it out of my “saved letters” file still steams me) there is a lesson to be learned; which is why I saved the letter in the first place.

There are millions of folks out there just like Ozora, and they are your potential clients and customers! Like it or not, they will judge you on some pretty insignificant criteria. That’s just the way it is. So, what did I do? I spent $20 to purchase a self-inking stamp of my signature. Actually, it’s a stamp of what my signature looks like after twenty tries to have the kind of signature that I think Ozora would approve of; and nobody’s complained about my autograph since. Before you say “Stephen, why bother? Why didn’t you just shrug it off and get on with your business? Why even give this person a moment of your time?” let me answer your question. Ozora Did Me A Favor! For every person who will correct your grammar, signature or other minor flaw in your advertising and/or correspondence, there must be at least ten others who won’t do business with you for the same reason! These other people just are not as mean-spirited, or don’t have the time, to correct your correspondence and send it back! In returning my letter, Ozora has allowed me to correct a rather minor flaw in my prospecting technique. A minor flaw which would have certainly continued to undermine the effectiveness of all of my business communications! The Technological Application: I don’t use the stamp very much anymore. Several years ago, I scanned my own signature into my computer graphics program, cleaned it up and colorized it. Now my autograph is perfect (as much as it ever will be), and the computer signs my prospecting correspondence for me. This is a real time-saver, and a wrist-saver too! I would suggest you do the same!
